Jar of tomatoes rescues Ukrainian male from forced mobilization
Though the exact date of the footage remains unclear, it has spread across Ukrainian and Russian Telegram channels. The video shows a barefoot man struggling against four officers from Ukraine’s Territorial Centers of Recruitment and Social Support (TCR), who were attempting to force him into a minivan.
During the confrontation, the man, later identified as Denis Tkachuk, born in 1997, shouts for someone to film him. As the officers struggle to push him into the vehicle, a glass jar – reportedly containing pickled tomatoes – is thrown from a nearby building, smashing on the ground near them. A bystander can be heard shouting, “Let him go already.”
“They want to kill me – that’s why they’re embarrassed,” the man yells as he manages to break free and escape. The draft officers then abandon the attempt and drive away.
The event highlights growing public frustration with Ukraine’s conscription tactics, which have become more aggressive since President Vladimir Zelensky signed a new draft law lowering the enlistment age and tightening enforcement measures.
Ukrainian lawmaker Roman Kostenko recently admitted that most recruits are not enlisting voluntarily but are being subjected to what he called “brutal compulsory conscription.” Another MP, Yury Kamelchuk, claimed draft officers are under strict quotas, using deceptive tactics like fake delivery orders to catch potential conscripts.
Numerous videos have surfaced showing officials detaining men by force in public, a practice now commonly referred to as “busification,” referencing the use of unmarked vans to transport unwilling recruits.
Russia has criticized Ukraine’s mobilization efforts, accusing Kiev of fighting a proxy war for Western powers “to the last Ukrainian.” President Vladimir Putin remarked that Ukraine’s conscription officers are now “grabbing people like dogs on the street.”
