Hormuz Transit 95 Percent Safe as US Aids Over 3,000 Ships

(MENAFN) More than 95% of commercial vessels crossing the Strait of Hormuz have completed their passage safely in recent months, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said Sunday, as Washington pointed to its escort role in a waterway at the heart of the Iran conflict.

“In recent months, over 95% of ships navigating the Strait of Hormuz have sailed through safely despite the IRGC’s unwarranted aggression,” CENTCOM, which oversees military operations in the region, said in a statement, referring to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The command said American forces have helped more than 3,000 merchant vessels transit the chokepoint over the past six months. It said that pace picked up after US forces cleared naval mines the IRGC had laid across international sea lanes.

U.S. troops also reached the “milestone of assisting Gulf partners in exporting more than 1.5 billion barrels of crude oil since summer,” the command said.

“We continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with our Gulf partners and the shipping industry,” CENTCOM commander Adm. Brad Cooper said during a visit to the waterway.

Control of the Strait remains a central flashpoint in the Iran war, which erupted in late February after joint US-Israeli strikes. The conflict has still not been resolved, despite a ceasefire and a memorandum aimed at concluding a final peace deal.
